Economic Inclusion

What We Do

In an economically equitable Detroit, all Detroiters are meeting their unique needs, prospering, and fully and fairly participating in all aspects of economic life within a thriving city and region. To do that, we believe that we must disrupt systemic racism, poverty, and other inequities to grow household income and wealth for Black Detroiters and other Detroiters of color. The Economic Inclusion team at Detroit Future City is leveraging worker voice to identify ways to remove barriers, create equitable pathways and change the narrative about Detroit’s talent base.

Advanced mobility is one of many fields that offer both jobs of the future and middle wages that offer pathways to the middle class. Advanced mobility refers to the means by which people, goods and information moves. This can include all modes of transportation, such as electric vehicles (EV), technology and information management, distribution models and much more. Many of the technologies and systems of the future are being designed today and we must prepare now to fully and fairly participate in the economic prosperity for entrepreneurs and workers. Through our work with the Global Epicenter of Mobility (GEM), we will test and pilot best practice interventions that enhance opportunities for historically excluded communities in this growing sector. As a partner on the GEM talent transformation team, we are using a human centered design approach to ensure that the lived experience of workers is guiding workforce solutions.

How We Engage

We are currently fostering partnership with companies to test three best practice interventions that remove barriers and enhance opportunities for historically excluded talent. With GEM partners, we created an interactive toolkit to uncover actionable solutions for combatting racial bias in the workplace, closing the information gap between talent and opportunity, and leveraging worker voice in advocacy and program design. We invite you to utilize the toolkit in your work and add to the solutions database within the tool.
