American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute Support

In February of 2014, President Obama announced that a $148M manufacturing institute would be based in Southeast Michigan. The 50,000-squarefoot facility is focused on research and design for new lightweight materials in the automotive and aircraft industries. The federal government provides a $70M investment, matched by a $78M from contracts and institutional investments made by consortium partners—University of Michigan, Ohio State University, and metals technology firm EWI.
