Here’s how Detroiters can get free estate planning help

May 8, 2025

In this BridgeDetroit article, Nushrat Rahman shares that Detroit residents can get free estate planning help through workshops hosted by the Detroit Public Library in partnership with local nonprofits and City Council Member Scott Benson. These sessions offer guidance on wills, deeds, and trusts, with access to attorneys who can help draft legal documents, aiming to prevent heirs’ property issues and protect generational wealth.

According to Rahman: “The push to educate Detroiters on estate planning is key because as many as 5,525 intergenerational properties in Detroit — worth more than $268 million — had unclear ownership, according to a 2024 analysis from the think tank Detroit Future City, which emphasized the importance of estate planning.”
