In this Detroit News article, Louis Aguilar speaks on Detroit’s growth and mayoral dynamics as the general election on Nov. 5 approaches. As part of the discussion, Aguilar focuses on the growing population, and what that means for Detroit neighborhoods and household incomes.
“An analysis of longer-term Census Bureau data by the Detroit Future City think tank reveals concerns that many residents bring up to mayoral candidates: the loss of Black residents and middle-class neighborhoods.
Since 2000, the city may have lost about one-third of its Black population, about 295,000 people, based on various census data, according to past Detroit Future City reports. Those findings fit into a national trend of Blacks increasingly moving to the suburbs, according to Detroit Future City. Detroit’s population is 78% Black.”
