Opportunities for the Next Mayoral Administration to Grow Detroit’s Middle Class

April 17, 2025

The City of Detroit will see a new mayoral administration take office on January 1, 2026, marking the end of a 12-year tenure. To help lay the groundwork for strategic priorities moving forward, DFC has released the report “Opportunities for the Next Mayoral Administration to Grow Detroit’s Middle Class,” which focuses on three key policy priorities for the next mayoral administration: building middle-class neighborhoods; improving wealth generation for Detroiters; and building climate-resilient infrastructure.

The brief builds upon DFC’s “Making the Middle Class” and “Growing Detroit’s African American Middle Class” reports to outline key strategies to grow the city’s middle class, both by increasing incomes and wealth for current residents and by attracting new middle-class households.
