October Meeting Recap

Housing in the Media
In October, the Housing Compact featured a panel and interactive session with local journalists covering housing—including evictions, new developments, city programs, affordability, tax foreclosure, home repair, and more. The panel went beyond headlines, digging into how stories get made, and how journalism can be leveraged for social change and community awareness.
The panel included Eli Newman, reporter for WDET, Detroit’s NPR Station, Nushrat Rahman, Economic Mobility Reporter for Detroit Free Press & BridgeDetroit, Aron Mondry, Editor & Reporter for The Dig of Outlier Media, Arielle Kass, Residential Real Estate Reporter, Crain’s Detroit Business, and Peter Van Dyke, CEO, VVK PR + Creative.
There were two breakout groups in which housing practitioners and journalists explored ways to work together to improve the housing system in Detroit and explore the nuances of reporting on this sector. There was a vigorous discussion around strengthening the connection between journalists and housing practitioners in order to build a sustainable relationship leading to stronger stories involving housing in Detroit.

Detroit Housing Resource Library in Development
The Detroit Housing Resource Library has been developed as a digitized collection of studies, instructional materials, and resources placed into a database. This is developing project that aims to function as a repository for Compact members, housing advocates and practitioners in Detroit. Resource libraries are useful in streamlining related topics within a field for either private or public use. This database is formatted via Airtable and it compiles resources under various categories within the housing topic including descriptions of each item, its associations, links and attachments, and time of updates and modifications. You may view the walkthrough presentation here. Please submit feedback to rcoker@detoitfuturecity.com.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency to Replace Classic FICO With More Inclusive Credit Model
Earlier last month, the Federal Housing Finance Agency received applause from fair housing organizations such as the National Fair Housing Alliance for replacing the Classic FICO credit model relied on by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for nearly 20 years, for the FICO 10T and VantageScore 4.0. Sandra Thompson, the FHFA’s director states that this model is more inclusive as it considers “new payment histories for borrowers when available, such as rent, utilities and telecom payments.” Click the link below to find out more on how this may impact homebuyers.
