Recognizing Detroit’s Black History
In the 1920s, the Black population in Detroit grew rapidly as migrants from the South arrived to seek employment in the automobile industry. Paradise Valley was the economic hub and entertainment center of a densely-populated African-American residential area called Black Bottom. As a result of urban renewal programs and the construction of freeways during the 60s, population growth and activity in Paradise Valley and the Black Bottom neighborhoods halted. Automobile manufacturers relocated to suburban areas necessitating the construction of expressways. Further, the I-375 portion of the Chrysler Freeway resulted in the displacement of families within the neighborhood resulting in residential and economic losses for Paradise Valley.
This February, we at Detroit Future City, recognize this pivotal point in Detroit’s history and honor Black History Month and the grassroots efforts that have occurred and for the ones that continue to make their mark on history.
