The State of Housing in Detroit: Speculation in its impact on Detroit Neighborhoods
At DFC we believe in increasing the number of asset-rich, economically accessible, and diverse neighborhoods. In the Detroit Housing ecosystem, we know that single family rentals play a crucial role in affordable housing. Issues like availability, cost burden, affordability and ownership are key issues to renters as well. Equipping renters and practitioners with information and programming is essential in this current environment. In May, the DNHC will host Aaron Mondry, Outlier Media where we will discuss the state of housing in Detroit through the lens of Real Estate speculation and its impact in destabilizing Detroit neighborhoods. We will highlight the work of Outlier Media’s Speculators of Detroit news series which covers key issues including cryptocurrency, remote property management and how this phenomenon is being regulated.

Tackling Heirs’ Property Challenges Together
In April, DFC convened community leaders, legal experts, and housing advocate for a solution-focused session on heirs’ property – an often overlooked barrier to generational wealth and housing stability. In partnership with LISC Detroit and the National Consumer Law Center, participants worked through key issues including probate, estate planning, and home repair needs. The insights gathered will inform policy and program strategies to protect homeownership and ensure families can remain rooted in Detroit.
Stay tuned as we continue advancing this critical work!
