‘Tangled titles’ could cost these Detroiters thousands

In this Outlier Media article, Koby Levin discusses that many Detroiters who lost homes in Wayne County tax foreclosures from 2015‑2020 are entitled to profits from the resale of their properties, but recovering those profits is often blocked by “tangled titles,” especially when the homeowner died before the property was foreclosed and the legal ownership wasn’t properly transferred. Levin shares how “a report from local think tank Detroit Future City found about 5,500 properties citywide owned by deceased people in 2023 out of approximately 379,000 parcels. But most of those properties hadn’t been through tax foreclosure.”
