Detroit’s jobless drops below 7% for first time since 2000; experts urge caution

In this article, Sarah Rahal with The Detroit News speaks to Detroit’s unemployment rate that has fallen, according to recently released November figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Ashley Williams Clark, director of the Center for Equity, Engagement and Research at the nonprofit DFC shared her thought on the decrease in unemployment, which she attributes to people leaving the labor force.

“Employment stayed relatively the same in 2022. Although employment is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, (it’s) slightly concerning there wasn’t more employment growth in 2022,” she said. “It’s important to focus not just on the number of jobs, but the quality of those jobs are important. Do they offer opportunities for Detroiters to increase their income and have a pathway into the middle class?”
