November Rental Work Group: Detroit Right To Counsel
Tonya Myers Phillips, Kellie Maki Foster, Rea Maci, and Tenesa Sanders of Detroit Right to Counsel Coalition presented on the need for tenant legal representation as a right. They shared the basics about the Right to Counsel Movement, the disproportionate impact evictions have on seniors, people with disabilities, and households headed by Black women, and how legal representation changes the outcomes of eviction proceedings. Jason Headen updated us on the Detroit Housing Network. Jason shared how the DHN program has been shaped, CHN Housing Partners work in Cleveland, and how DHN housing systems will work. Click here for the DHN presentation deck.

Are you a landlord in Detroit?
Building Community Value and Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Studies have teamed up to conduct interviews with landlords and property managers to understand their experience managing residential units in Detroit. Each interview will take place over the phone with a trained WSU survey team member, and will last around 30 minutes, the interview is voluntary and completely confidential. Each participant will receive a $50 gift card for completing the survey. The deadline to express interest in participating is Dec 10, 2021!

DFC’s Economic Equity Innovation Series launches Dec. 15th!
The Center for Equity, Engagement, and Research launches the Economic Equity Series on Dec. 15th. The first event in the series will discuss why growing and retaining the African American middle class in Detroit is an indication of economic equity. Local and national leaders will share examples of approaches to growing middle class neighborhoods.

Rental Home Energy Programs & Policies for Cities
Jan 13, 2022 @ 11:00AM: RMI and EcoWorks recently supported a cohort of 10 Michigan cities working to address energy use and equity in rental housing. These cities modeled best practices from leading examples across the country to develop policies and programs in partnership with local community-based organizations. RMI and Ecoworks will review the curriculum, reflect on outcomes and lessons learned and detail the resources that other municipalities can use to inform and accelerate their own efforts.
