Before
After
Describe the overall process for transforming your lot.

It was very interesting; it was an example of charity and work in a working process. I hope to instill in people who haven’t otherwise had a chance to have this community/opportunity to help the environment and beautify the community. The process fell in line with what I teach and preach.

Did you customize your lot design? If so, how?

We did. We added different trees to the Urban Edge, and just kept the flowering trees in the Forest Patcher.

Is your current project part of a larger plan, goal, or initiative within your community?

Yes

Purpose of the Project:

Beautification and space activitation

Lessons Learned
Land Acquisition

Through Detroit Land Bank. Those wonderful people, I had an idea and Darryl directed me to that lot. Marshall Bullock and Darryl Earl invited me to an event and told me how things were working, and showed me the lots. I wrote a proposal for what I would do with it and named it and everything else fell into place.

Skill Building

I learned how to plant a tree, and how hard it is, and what goes into it. And how to coordinate volunteers.

Community Engagement

We asked them to allow us to use their electricity for the Thursday “Concerts in the Park” events. It further allowed us to introduce ourselves and our park to the community.

Fundraising

I did not conduct any other fundraising.

Other

What was challenging about this process, and how did you adapt?

The main challenge is the watering component and how to implement it, but I think we got the answer. Everything else was pretty much manageable and doable. By implementing several strategic plans, a combination of suggestions and ideas, coupled together they create a solution to the problem.

What is the maintenance plan for this project after its first year?

Chet landscaping to do the grass cutting and weeding. We want to be able to annually go in and do stuff, get the ground ready for fall plantings. I want to say mulching. I like the water tote idea, implemented with “adopt a tree” program, and the water admission for Thursday’s Concerts in the Park, with pallets to hold water jugs.
