Before
After
Describe the overall process for transforming your lot.

It was a lengthy and arduous task, but it served the immediate purpose: the prevention of dumping on the lot, through beautification. Imagining, planning, and then achieving the vision takes time.

Did you customize your lot design? If so, how?

A little, we customized the Dumping Preventer Lot Design by replacing the barberry bushes with the roses and catmint found in the Paisley Patch design. We also added garden beds, which extended the lot's impact beyond the original footprint of the lot design.

Is your current project part of a larger plan, goal, or initiative within your community?

Yes

Purpose of the Project:

To deter dumping

Lessons Learned
Land Acquisition

When the City originally launched their leasing of lots program, we had every intention of leasing the lot, but it never came to fruition.

Skill Building

The children learned how to plant and benefitted from the important concept of working as a team.

Community Engagement

We increased the exposure of the benefits of healthy eating to the youth within the neighborhood.

Fundraising

Apart from our Working with Lots grant, no additional funding was generated, but the raised beds were donated. We would like to fund raise to incorporate lighting for evening events in the future.

Other

What was challenging about this process, and how did you adapt?

Consistent watering is a challenge, and the poor soil was unexpected. But we've been fortunate to be able to use water from the neighbors across the street.

What is the maintenance plan for this project after its first year?

Maintenance will include pruning, weeding, and watering. We hope to build an irrigation station using the Keep Growing Detroit plans.
